Why Homeowners Remodel a Tub Instead of Replacing It with a Shower

A lot of remodeling advice assumes every tub should eventually become a shower, but that’s not the right call for every household. Families with young kids often rely on the tub daily, and plenty of homeowners simply prefer a soak at the end of the day over a quick shower. If your household still uses the tub regularly, remodeling it, rather than removing it, is usually the more practical choice.

That said, an outdated tub can drag down an otherwise nice bathroom. Yellowed fiberglass, cracked caulk, dated tile patterns, and worn fixtures are all common reasons homeowners come to us wanting the tub area refreshed without changing what the room is used for.

What a Tub Remodel Includes

A tub remodel can cover anything from a simple refresh to a full upgrade, depending on the condition

What’s included:

Tub replacement

swapping an old fiberglass or acrylic tub for a new one

Surround retiling

updating the tile with a current style and proper waterproofing underneath

Deep soaking tubs

for households wanting a more relaxing, spa-like feel

Fixture and hardware updates

new faucets, handles, and drains if the tub itself is still in good shape

Freestanding tubs

a popular upgrade for primary bathrooms going for a standout centerpiece

Whatever the scope, we check for water damage behind the existing surround before finishing anything new, since tile installed over a compromised area rarely lasts. New fixtures from brands like Moen and Delta round out the project, chosen for dependable performance rather than just appearance.

Nelson did a fantastic job renovating our bathroom. The quality of his work really stands out—the tile in the shower is clean and precise, the finishes look modern and high-end, and the vanity and fixtures were installed perfectly. He was also great to work with throughout the project—reliable, easy to communicate with, and stayed on schedule while keeping everything clean and organized. We’re extremely happy with the final result and would highly recommend Nelson to anyone looking for high-quality work

Nelson is amazing. He can do it all and really pays attention to detail. He took our 100 year old home in Eastwood down to the studs and took care of the foundation , wiring, plumbing, hardwood floors and everything else. It’s now a beautiful open design with modern conveniences. He then added a utility room and a spacious bedroom suite. It’s everything we wanted and more.

I hired Nelson to complete a kitchen remodel and to build an office in an existing space in my house. To start my process, I received quotes from 6 different companies. Nelson’s price was right in line with the average quotes that I received. However, during the quote process, Nelson shared some unique solutions and had good suggestions for how to handle the projects. His ideas were constructive and he seemed genuine and knowledgeable. I selected him to do the project as a result. The finished product of both projects is excellent. Nelson delivered the project on time, at the budget as outlined from the beginning. He operates with good attention to detail and was able to address everything all the way down to minor issues. Overall, I had a very positive experience working with Nelson and would recommend him to others looking to complete home renovations. Will hire him again in the future.

I hired Brito Designs for a full kitchen remodel. The process was quick and easy from start to finish. The crew showed up every day to keep the project moving at a steady pace. I was impressed with the daily progress and communication. What I was most pleased with is the fact that everything was kept clean on a daily basis. I am thrilled with my new kitchen and planning to have them return in the future for my master bathroom remodel.

What Shapes the Cost of a Tub Remodel

Tub remodel pricing varies based on a few key factors. Whether you’re keeping your existing tub and just updating the surround and fixtures, versus replacing the tub itself, is usually the biggest cost driver. A standard acrylic or fiberglass tub replacement costs meaningfully less than a deep soaking tub or a freestanding tub, which often requires additional plumbing and floor support considerations.

Tile choice for the surround, standard ceramic versus natural stone or a premium porcelain, also shifts the total. And as with any tub project, what we find once the old surround comes down matters. Water damage hidden behind years of failed caulk is common and needs to be properly addressed before new tile goes in. We provide a detailed estimate after seeing your space in person, since pricing this accurately without an in-home visit isn’t realistic.

Our Process

Our Shower Remodeling Process

You Reach Out

Tell us what’s not working with your current tub setup, whether that’s the tub itself, the surround, or just the fixtures.

Phone Screening

We’ll ask about the scope, is it a full tub replacement or a surround and fixture refresh, and whether any layout changes are involved.

Budget Check

We’ll ask for a ballpark budget so we can confirm honestly whether it aligns with the scope before scheduling an in-home visit.

In-Home Visit

We inspect the space, check for underlying water damage, and talk through the options that fit your goals and budget.

Written Estimate

You’ll get a detailed estimate by email the following day, covering the tub, tile, and fixtures involved.

Contract & Scheduling

Once approved, we draft a contract with a payment schedule, lock in a start date, and collect a downpayment on day one, with additional payments tied to project milestones.

Construction & Final Walkthrough

We remove the old tub or surround as needed, address anything found underneath, and install the new tub, tile, and fixtures. We check everything with you, run the water, and confirm the finished space meets what we agreed on.

How Long Does It Take to Remodel a Tub?

A fixture and tile update typically takes about a week. A full tub replacement with a new surround and tile usually runs a bit longer, especially if we find water damage behind the old surround once demolition starts, which is common in tubs with years of failed caulk.

Installing a deep soaking tub or freestanding tub can also add time, since these often involve additional plumbing and floor support work. We’ll walk you through a realistic schedule based on your bathroom’s actual condition during your in-home visit.

Tub Remodeling FAQs

Can you install a soaking tub or freestanding tub?

Yes. We install deep soaking tubs and freestanding tubs for homeowners wanting a more relaxing setup, and we’ll make sure the plumbing and floor support are suited for the added weight and depth.

If the tub itself is still in good condition, we can often just retile the surround and swap fixtures, which costs less and takes less time than a full tub replacement.

It’s common in older tub surrounds, especially where caulk has failed over time. We’ll address any damage we find before installing new tile, since building over a compromised area only leads to repeat problems.

Should I remodel my tub or convert it to a shower instead?

It depends on how your household actually uses the space. If you still use the tub regularly, a remodel makes more sense. If it’s rarely used, a tub-to-shower conversion might be the better long-term choice. We can help you weigh that during your consultation.

We focus on full tub and surround replacement rather than surface refinishing, since refinished tubs tend to wear unevenly over time. We’re happy to explain the trade-offs during your estimate.

We typically work with acrylic and fiberglass tubs for durability and pair them with Moen or Delta fixtures, both known for reliable, long-term performance in daily use.
